Just when there werent enough PA student diaries out there, here is another one! Just kidding. Actually I found 2. So ill just add mine until i can think of another clever name for my blog.
My name is Shani, 27....married to a wonderful man named Dave. Have cats and love my bathtub. I was just accecpted into the PA program at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. Very excited and amazed....only 25 lucky people get into this program a year out of 1000+ applicants. I dont write that to me like nah nah i got in, but instead when I tell you where Ive been you will be amazed too.
My PA journey started 3 yrs ago when I first got married. I had been just diagnosed with endometriosis. Endometriosis is a painful disease that affects about 5 million women a year. Like them, I was just glad to have a diagnosis and not thinking that I was going crazy. Over the next 3 years, I had 3 laps and one resection. It's amazing to look back and know that a couple years ago that you were an invalid and on medicine that makes you feel pregnant and also have menopause at the same time. eeesh!
One of the surgeries I had a PA assisted. She was friendly and I asked her questions about what she does, etc. I had never heard of a PA before. So she let me round with her and I also rounded with her husband. I got to sit in on a hernia repair. After that I was hooked. I looked at my options that thought that the only thing that was standing in my way was my health and math. :)
I started to learn everything I could about a PA, and also became EMT-B certified. I rode as much hours as I could on the truck- in a month I did like 120 hrs. All that looks great on an application so If you are pre-pa, think about becoming an EMT.
Here I am. I cant believe ill be starting soon, and I wanted to start this the summer before school. I will also be a patient care technician(have an interview thursday) so I should have alot of stories about that.
I will also try not to be too negative in my blogs, I think I sometimes sound sadder than I am, so if they are going that way, dont be afraid to tell me.
